The last watch?

Jarden 2025. 4. 21. 13:11

Why should I order the 20-year-old second-hand Casio digital watch for 150$ from the US?

Casio is an amazing watch company. They manufacture around 10$ to 1000$ watches.  I was satisfied whenever I got Casio watches. I acknowledge and somewhat agree that "Man's jewelry is a watch."  However, I think I am a more practical person in the price-wise. Each of my watches is not over $200. I have several watches, but I want to get a digital watch for the last. The G-Shock is one of the Casio brand, which has the motto of a strong watch.

The G-Shock was... kind of expensive, but it seemed like a symbol of success. I always wanted to have one someday. But after I threw my Dolphin watch far away because it was annoyingly strong, I tried not to buy a digital watch unless absolutely necessary.

I've had many watches over the years, but now that I have smartwatches, I find myself avoiding simple watches anymore. Now that I'm done throwing away old ones with young temp, I'm looking for one to last.

It would be nice to have many functions that are linked to a mobile phone, but it also consumes a lot of battery.

G-Shock + Tough Solar are basics, and... the last thing I couldn't give up was the vibration alarm. After searching, I found that the GW-400 model was the only one.

The appearance wasn't that appealing, but still...just because it's solar-powered and has a vibration alarm...but it was discontinued a long time ago. Released in 2005...it's a 20-year-old watch. I found it while searching eBay, but the condition of the watch didn't seem that good. Normally, I buy something new if possible...and I think it's my last watch...so I was thinking of waiting for something in better condition...but it also receives radio signals...etc. "Worrying just delays delivery" YouTuber 'Heukwoo' said, so I shouted and searched just in case and ended up here.

I ended up spending $150 on a used Casio watch, but I'm still grateful that I have that kind of money.

May 5, 2025 Review, to the G-Shock online community,

I bought it from an eBay used seller in Toronto from the US on 4/20 and received it on 5/5. I unexpectedly paid $30 more in customs and consumption tax (why do used ones have this added). It was almost the price of a new GWM-5610, but... satisfaction is important..

While waiting, I looked at it almost every day to see how far it had come. I was suspicious that the same seller kept selling the GW-400 model, but I found out that he was 100% satisfied and that he used slightly different pictures.

It is definitely used. You could say it is B-grade. There was still dust, and it was not maintained, but considering that it was sent used, the packaging was perfect, and the time and settings were set for a full charge, so I thought that a 100% seller is different.

It was discontinued as a 2005 model, but the fact that it has a tough solar and vibration alarm without USB charging was a decisive factor in my purchase. Radio reception, thermometer, full auto LED, moon graph, and tide graph are additional functions.

Size comparison shot, GW-400, Timex, Miband 4, among watches with a living battery

As a G-Shock beginner, I studied the functions by reading the manual I received before, and tried the vibration alarm that I was most curious about...
It is a bit weak to use as a wake-up call, so I am worried. I think I might miss the alarm if I am doing something strenuous while awake. The function that I use the most on the Miband 4 is the vibration alarm. If you put it on the floor, it vibrates loudly enough not to wake my wife, so I can get up carefully. Sometimes, when I get useless notifications and think it is annoying, I get angry and come here.

You can set 3 alarms, and each ends with 10 vibrations for 10 seconds. The first 3-4 are short, and the rest are a bit longer. The snooze alarm can be set to 10 seconds, 5 minutes, and up to seven times, but I still think it's a difficult mission to wake up with just the watch vibration alarm.

I usually wear the Mi Band and sometimes wear a regular watch, but the G-Shock has a sense of weight and presence... and it's annoying when typing. The full auto light is much better than the Mi Band, and it looks special, so I'm drawn to it.

It's not a multi-band? It's a two-band radio reception (wave receptor) (Japan and the US).
Toronto is far away, but it seems to be within the reception range, but it wasn't caught manually.
The buttons are more recessed than I thought, so it's not easy to press them by holding them up with your fingernail.

Additional photos and a picture of the watch.
It's definitely used watch.

I just wiped it with a wet tissue and wore it, but the cigarette smell is annoying. I'm thinking of washing it with soap and a toothbrush when I shower.
Since tomorrow is my day off, I'll try the wake-up mission with the vibration snooze.

May 6, 2025 Review to the G-Shock online community,

As I said yesterday, the watch I received yesterday smelled quite a bit, so I washed it with soap and used an old toothbrush, and then put it on and took a shower.
I dried it well, set it to snooze, and tried it, but as expected, I missed the vibration alarm and woke up about 10 minutes late.
The automatic radio reception is good and stable.

Today, when I was exercising, it was bothering me, so I took it off, took a shower, and tried to put it on again, and the upper part of the LCD screen had turned gray. At first, I thought it was a fingerprint, but it wasn't.

------------

I need to look for how to change o-ring and silicon protection for the watch.
